PAPER MACHINE SECTION PRIMER

This is a basic primer describing paper machine sections for the familiarization of those that may not be involved in the paper industry. There are to many variations of machines and designs to depict here. Examples of machines are Newsprint, Board, Coated paper, Tissue, Pulp, etc. Accordingly  there are numerous variations of section requirements and placement in  the machine.  The images shown are only for illustration purpose and not intended as a  technical presentation. The images are cropped from the generic paper machine shown in the Virtual Reality Paper Machine  presented on this website and lack detail and specificity.

Headbox - distributes stock to the former section in a uniform manner.
Former -drainage unit-drains the water from the stock-many variations available determined by grade and requirements-fourdrinier shown.
Press Section -  Function of the press section is to press the water from the stock in a uniform manner.

A press section-can be a number of presses, felted or unfelted.-three felted presses shown

Press rolls are available in a variety of configurations. Examples are plain, grooved, suction, anti deflection, metal or nonmetal material.

Dryer Section - Function of the dryers is to dry the sheet. Their are many dryer configurations available. Our generic machine shows steam cylinders, 3 sections. The dryers can be felted or unfelted. Dryer section shown is typical of the three sections of our generic machine.
Breaker Stack - Breaker stack is placed between dryer sections and available in several basic configurations.  Optimization will determine placement, number of dryers before and after stack.
Size Press - Basic unit allows sizing or light pigmentation on one or two sides.

Available in many configurations. Inclined  size press shown.

Calender Stack - Function is to compact and level and/or smooth the sheet. Number of rolls,  heating etc determined by specific sheet characteristics required of product being processed.

Reel -  Function is to wind the continuous web into large diameter (jumbo) rolls capable of being  processed in shipping size on the winder.

Unwind - In our generic machine configuration is located in the last position of the jumbo storage rails.  Function  is to support the jumbo roll and provide braking to properly wind and tension the web during winding.

Winder - Function is to slit and wind the jumbo roll from the reel into sizes required for the finishing processes. Like other sections of the paper machine, winders are available in many designs to accommodate product requirements.
